Mardi Gras is a powerful global symbol of queer pride, unity and resistance. We are proud to be part of a campaign that defends and celebrates its inclusive, diverse and unifying nature.
As organisers of Protect Mardi Gras, we make the following commitments:
Our shared principles
- Many voices, one parade. Mardi Gras must remain a space where people from different backgrounds, experiences and beliefs come together in solidarity.
- Strategic inclusion. We believe in challenging bad behaviour and harmful institutions – but we do it in ways that build power, grow support, and win real change. That means welcoming individuals who are showing up in good faith, even if the institutions they’re part of need reform.
- Unity over division. Mardi Gras thrives when we come together – not when we draw hard lines that exclude potential allies.
- Global visibility. Mardi Gras is one of the world’s biggest platforms for LGBTQIA+ visibility. Weakening it weakens our collective voice, here and around the world.
- Transparency builds trust. We believe Mardi Gras should be governed openly and accountably. While some matters – like HR or commercial negotiations – must remain confidential, greater transparency will strengthen governance and build community confidence.
Our campaign conduct
- We will not engage in personal attacks or online pile-ons. We welcome support from anyone who shares our core mission – regardless of their views on other issues.
- We will model respectful and strategic activism. We welcome criticism of systems and institutions, but reject blanket exclusions that undermine coalition-building.
- We will focus on shared goals so we can speak with a unified voice on key campaign issues. Our diversity makes us stronger – but we stand together when it counts.
- We will model transparency. We will share our positions on key issues, explain our votes, and communicate openly with members wherever possible – while respecting the need for confidentiality in limited, appropriate circumstances.
Our voting commitments
- We will oppose motions that seek to ban LGBTQIA+ police, politicians, sponsors or community groups based solely on affiliation.
- We will support motions and leadership that uphold Mardi Gras as a broad, inclusive and strategic platform for queer celebration and political progress.
- We will oppose motions we believe are related to entryist tactics that seek to destabilise or narrow the mission of Mardi Gras.
We believe Mardi Gras should remain a beacon of joy, resistance, and community – welcoming, not dividing. Powerful enough to challenge injustice, and strong enough to drive change.
Many voices. One parade.
